Administrative  notes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Start: 7:37 pm; End: 9:15pm.  Present: Cathy, Elaine, Kevin, Junko,
Charley, Jeremy, Rachel, Henning, Kate, Bridget, Yale, Sparky, Chris
Falling, Ping, Joe Kuchta, Theresa, Alexis, Dave, Emily, Amy, Ezra
Officers'  reports:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SVP (Barbara): We had a project at George's Island for Halloween.
       Next project is Chapter Weekend II - sign up!

MVP (Dave): Had a meeting with big brothers on Monday. The
       pledges are coming along very well.
       This week is last set of pledge meetings. Remind your littles of
       that; if they can't make it, tell me.
       It's not too early to schedule interviews and think about whom
       you want to attend.
       Pledges are going to sponsor some fellowship events. If your
       little brother needs leadership, consider a study break.

AVP (Gilbert): [at ASA meeting] WUAPO will be out Real Soon
       Now. If you have updates about events, let me know now.

APOcEd (bert): [not present] Apoc should be out before end of week.

Historian (Richard): [not present] made photoboard. Add your
       name.

President (Kate): I sent registration for Conclave - we have 6 going,
       but it's not too late to add more.
       I need to talk to people going to Nationals.
       Welcome to John, the BU MVP.
       Instead of CPPC, we'll have a fellowship event at Chapter Week-
       end II Sat. night.

Committee  reports:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UMOC (Barbara):  We raised around $700. Stephanie Sparvero won.
       We had prizes. It was a good time. Thanks to PC's and helpers.
       Ping: and we got in the Tech. We still haven't decided how to
       distribute prizes.
Book Exchange (Kevin):  Books are leaving office by Thanksgiving the
       latest.
New  Business:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Drop poster paint not-leaving-fourth-floor policy:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Richard's statement:    We have, in fact, often loaned out painting
       supplies to groups which have taken them off the fourth floor
       and returned them on time. This means:
  1. Many people do not know about such a policy.
  2. it has not been enforced.
  3. we have empirical evidence proving that it is utterly unnecessary.
  4. since we have not been uniformly enforcing it, it would be unfair
     to the group in question to start enforcing it without further
     discussion.
  5. it can be (and is being) argued by student groups that it places
     them at an inconvenience by not allowing them to work where
     they normally would, which would be against the service goal of
     providing them with easy access to drop poster supplies.
Meeting:
~~~~~~~
  1. CAC only wants people to use drop cloth
  2. If groups want to leave fourth floor, they leave student center
     altogether
  3. PubDir could take more active role to fine late people, if letting
     paint leave 4th floor implies late return. Brothers should mark
     dates on form!
  4. we have only 2 sets of paint. And people might cheat by using
     expired ID's and not return paint.

Motion to not let paint off 4th floor. 10+1-1A passed. Charley will
write a standing policy. [someone will send correction mail back to the
misinformed student group?]

Nationals Legislation:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dave:   There is a legislation packet of motions that will come up at
       National [on office's message board].  Ping has grouped it by
       concept.  Please read it.  Ping and I need to know chapter's
       stance. Move that all decisions on this topic be made by straw
       polls of active brothers and pledges. 12+0-0A passed.
APO & BSA
  1. Take out explicit BSA references form rituals, Bylaws, etc.  or
     replace with "heritage" phrase. 9+0-3A passed.
  2. Remove BSA representatives from National Board.  The BSA
     don't ordinarily show up and past national presidents usually ab-
     stain to votes.  Let's leave symbolism and give them voice and
     not vote.  No vote for BSA: 8+2-3A passed.  No voice for BSA:
     0+6-4A failed.
Toast Song
  1. Change "men of" to "true to".  Some women at AX strongly
     agree that they are not men. And "Men of" sounds weird to new
     people and people we work for. 5-point vote: +3.5.4.1.1- passed.
  2. Add a third verse Cheesy and makes song too long.  1+11-1A
     failed.
Rituals
[happened after PFTGOTO]
  1. Make blindfolds optional.  We proposed it.  We'd better support
     it!
  2. In pledge ritual,  historian will read pledge of allegiance before
     pledges take it. 11+0- passed.
  3. Stage directions at initiation ceremony:  reminds person to open
     the door after knocking. many-2-0 passed.
  4. Four amendments about brothers who are citizens of other coun-
     tries.
      (a) Make an effort to present flags of the countries of the par-
          ticipating pledges/initiates in addition to the US flag.  Yale
          has a collection. Some don't care about any flags. 6+0-5A
          passed
      (b) Let citizens of other countries recite their pledges after the
          US pledge. We should poll pledges beforehand to avoid em-
          barssment:  11+0-1A passed.  Make it explicitly optional:
          10+0-1A passed.
      (c) Replace "America" with "the US of America". 7+1-4A passed.
      (d) People from other countries will have a "moment of silence"
          instead of the pledge of their own countries if they don't have
          a pledge. People are concerned that this resembles mourning
          for someone dead. The amendment makes this mandatory:
          0+9-3A failed. Make it optional: 10+0-1A passed.
  5. Spiel about service program is currently stated by the 2 advisors.
     Give 1 part to SVP. 8+0-2A passed.
  6. Appoint committee to spend 2 years researching and coming up
     with new and better rituals. It's a start. 6+1-6A passed.
  7. Reveal explanation of the coat of arms. One symbol, "the cross of
     Lafayette College" is a reminder, and "our God" should be struck
     because it's not a symbol of God in this context. Cross is only a
     symbol of God to Christians. If we strike it, the only connection
     left between Cross and Things eternal is "our roots."
Last point was tabled due to possible serious implications.  Further
discussion of that and other legislation material ensues at dinner trip,
tentatively Thu 11/10/94. Also the mailing-list apo-legislation.
