Ok, that sounds like a good idea. I suggest turning on directory-sharing
for DT. You'd admit that if you could not mount/attach/add lockers on
Athena, your workstation loses a lot of power...

Yeah, we should install ViruScan. I see SSH and HostExplorer on DT (doesn't
that make SecureCRT almost unnecessary??)

There are a couple of useful things I can immediately think of on the NTOP:

MTS - Microsoft Transaction Server - an easy way to transport data
programmatically as a fail/commit/rollback transaction, either in C++ (COM)
or Java (class library). That, and the fact that any MS server has some
dependency on MTS makes its install worthwhile.

PWS - Personal Web Server - a bare-bones IIS 4.0 web server. Can process
ASP. Also, some BackOffice servers depend on IIS (i.e. Proxy Server).

MMC - Microsoft Management Console - all MS Servers use this common
architecture to configure itself. The limited FTP server and PWS server use
MMC. With it you can also manage all web-shared directories.

MDAC and RDO - Distributed and Remote data objects/components. I've never
used it knowingly, first hand, but I know some servers depend on it.

Additional niceties include a Script debugger for JScript/VBScript/ASP,
Windows Scripting Host (a language neutral scripting architecture - VBScript
and JScript engines come bundled, but anyone with interest can write, say,
an engine implementing PERL for it and PERL can instantly script NT
operations).

I realize that most things on NTOP are not directly useful for Athena at
all. However, they do make DeathTongue a more useful machine... And I do
have a question about DT's role. What's it for, exactly??

I realize that right now there's very little for DT to do. We have no
file-server farm with applications being shared out and stuff like that. We
don't have login scripts and such related automation tools for
administration and such. We don't have roaming NT profiles enabled (so your
desktop/customizations are stuck to the local machine instead of being
available to you on any NT workstation at MIT), etc. Heck, we don't even
bother customizing IE with its admin kit to create a common IE installation
or even have a one CD to "setup" a PC for MIT. I've always wondered why the
last two items don't exist to be handed out to anyone starting at MIT with a
PC.

Perhaps there are administrative/technological issues here that is
non-obvious. Maybe Pismere would have a better idea about these issues?
