Right, let`s get this VBScript thing into perspective, particularly
for all those MSWindows users out there who think that Microsoft
and Intel rule the world.
The Internet has been, is, and will increasingly be multiformat. The
nature of the Internet, the Web, Java, and other related software
technologies is that it doesn`t matter what hardware/OS you`re using.
The future is going to see all manner of devices using all manner of
hardware connecting to the net, and they`ll all run OSes written by
different people and companies. The key factor is that all these
devices will interpret data to an agreed standard - that of the
Web / Java and whatever evolves out of it. *The Internet is the new
operating system* - It won`t matter whether you use settop boxes /
workstations / games consoles / PC / Amiga / Mac/ anything, as long as
it's running some sort of software that can interpret the Internet.
Microsoft are panicking - they`re losing their core business -
operating systems - and they`ve just realised it, hence the
turnaround with regard to Windows development, MSN and so on, and
there`s nothing they can ultimately do about it. Why do you think
they have integrated the Web so heavily into the Win96 update and
made it free - because they know Windows is going to fade out - as
will all other OSes - to be replaced by whatever evolves out of the
conglomeration of current Internet software standards (Java, the Web,
VRML etc.). MS want you to stick with Windows as long as possible,
despite the inevitability of its imminent death. Likewise for Intel,
who rely on MS to sell their chips.
VBScript can ONLY succeed if it is utterly detached from Windows and
runs on ANY platform and can be freely implemented by anyone on any
hardware (with or without a licence fee) - just like Java will be
able to. This won`t happen.
As regards VBScript being easier than Java, of course it is - you`re
not supposed to be comparing the two. JavaScript is the much superior
alternative to VBScript. You won't have to learn Java for most things
- you'll simply plug together other people`s Java applets/modules and
alter their behaviour with JavaScript. This will quite likely become the new
model for popular software development as, relatively, it will be
both easy and quick, while still being very flexible.
OK? - No worries, everything'll turn out fine in the end...
Alexander Kerr.

By the way, Sun, I`m going to be a graduate next year - any chance of
an interesting job?
