it extends so that by 1990 each student can be provided with a
workstation at a total system cost of about 10% of M.I.T tuition.
I think they meant 10% of the total tuition which would be $6,800 in
1991 dollars. Hopefully that would buy a VaxStation type machine
roughly the same power that is in the clusters that the student could
take with them when they left MIT. You can buy a reasonable 3100 for
that money now. Getting licenses to all the software and figuring out
how to take it with you has not been worked out. Of course this assumes
that the dorms and living groups are wired so that it is a useful alternative
to the present system of clusters. Still a ways to go.
