For $1.7k, you could get yourself a MacII or Mac LC; for $2k Mac SE/30
(2Meg of RAM only -- add $500 for 4Meg [these are MCC prices]) with some
software/monitor/printer (perhaps), etc.
More reasonable machines are more expensive... a Mac IIfx w/4Mb RAM and
80 Meg hard drive is $5k. Mac IIci w/5Mb RAM and 80 Meg hard drive is
$3.8k. You can run MacX on these models, granted you get more RAM.
A NeXT is much more reasonable, even at $3.5K, you can run X (but not
under NeXTStep), Zephyr (either X or NeXTStep), almost anything else you
want to (AFS with a network drop). Much faster, too.
You can get a 386 40Mhz, 100Meg hard drive, 3.5" and 5.25" drives, SVGA
w/monitor, 4Meg RAM, and software for $1800. You can get Coherent or
Minix for $100. Or OS/2 2.0 when it comes out, at a higher price. Lots
of companies sell Ethernet boards, and these have more games than the
others (and usually better, in my opinion, except where it comes to
Amigas).
My personal opinion? Get yourself a NeXT if you have the money, or
either an Amiga 3000 or a stacked 386/486.
