Membership Vice President
Emily
The membership vice president has three major duties,
all of which are essential to the chapter. First, the
MVP is responsible for arranging the events which will
attract the new pledges. Second, they are responsible
for guiding the pledges throughout their pledge term
and ensuring that they do not unconsciously drift away
from the chapter. Third, and certainly not least, the
MVP is in charge of MemComm, which should work to keep
the members of the chapter active.
To recruit new members, I think the most effective method
is to have personal contact with the prospectives. To do
this, I will certainly get together enough brothers to call
the people who have signed up and talk to them. Also I
would really like to implement Ari's idea of brothers
in letter shirts going around on frosh moving day with carts
and helping them move. This would demonstrate how useful
community service is more than we could ever tell them.
And of course there would be the open meetings/projects etc.
As it stands now, the pledge program seems to have very
good ideas. There are not any significant changes to be
made in that respect. But I think that the chapter as
a whole should be more involved in the pledge meetings.
I would also work with ServComm and various individuals
who can teach chapter skills to be sure that the pledges
are able to attend a variety of service projects, which
often is a problem, since pledges don't tend to front-load
very much. And of course there's the big brother program.
MemComm is also a vital, but often neglected, component
of the MVP's position. It is responsible for keeping the
brotherhood active and involved. MemComm also should
provide support for the SVP in getting people to go to
projects. To do this, the first thing I would have
MemComm organize would be groups of 3-4 brothers
signing up to spend an evening calling brothers who haven't
signed up for the projects occurring during the next two
weeks. This would be very effective for getting people
to go on projects, since it's much more difficult to
refuse somebody you know on the phone than it is to ignore
a sign-up sheet or an e-mail. And since this idea would
only require each brother to call once per term, it would
be much less hosing than expecting each seperate PC to call
for their project. The other things I will ask of MemComm are
suggestions for the pledge program and to help the fellowship
chair run the long-awaited-still-as-far-as-I-know-PC-less-inactive
study break.
The last question I expect you to ask is how much time I
will have to devote to these ideas. Currently my schedule
for next term has four classes. They end at two on Monday
and Wednesday; they last for only two hours each on Tuesday
and Thursday; and for one hour on Friday. So I'll be spending
a lot of time in the office =). And I think it's very good
for the pledges to have an MVP who's constantly hanging around.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but I hope this has given you a sense
of the specific things I would do as MVP. If you have questions,
comments, suggestions, or flames, please feel free to e-mail me,
talk to me, or write in the flame book, or whatever.
