I have no idea how she got my name, but anyone have any
comments? Sounds like it could be that illusive 'continuing project'
we've been looking for.

Ari

Subject: The Boys' and Girls' Club of Somerville
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Hi! I am the Education Coordinator for the Boys' and Girls' Club of
Somerville, located in Union Square, and I am in desperate need for
volunteers to help with our Homework and Reading Clubs. I thought I would
contact your group because of my association with MIT (I am Wellesley '91
and my husband is MIT '90) and ask for your help.
A state wide test was conducted this past June, and Somerville children
scored in the bottom 5% in reading skills. I have been well aware of this
deficiency for two years now, and I am working to build a volunteer base so
that it will be possible to read with each child who needs help every day.
The children range in ages from 6 to 14, and many of them are from Haiti,
so their parents barely speak English, nevermind read it, therefore making
it impossible for the children to learn at home. I am hoping to fill this
hole.
If it makes a difference, several of the children do live in Cambridge, so
it could be considered as directly assisting your immediate community
If anyone in your organization would be interested in helping, please have
them contact me at the Club, 628-4665, or they can send me email at
twoods@mstout.tiac.net. Union Square is only a 5 minute drive from Kendall
Square, and there is a bus between the two locations that runs quite
regularly.
Thank you very much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Tara C. Woods
