I have to disagree with Nick. I'm very pleased with the material Marc Okrand
sent me for inclusion in the last issue of HolQeD. But then, I have some
information on the situation that Nick doesn't.
Specifically, the lexical items Orkand came forward with were in response to
a list I had sent him. Some time last summer Marc had mentioned to me a
willingness to provide some new items for HolQeD. Not wanting the
responsibility of trying to decide what we were most lacking or what would be
of greatest use, and not wanting to turn the thing into a free-for-all on the
list, I shared the information with the instructors at last summer's camp:
Rich Yampell, David Barron, Jerome Cowan, and Glen Proechel. We all mulled
it over and the the list I sent Marc was the result of our efforts. So, if
you're unhappy with truths revealed (or to use Nick's aphorism, if you think
you got coal) then don't blame Marc, the fault lies elsewhere.
But I'm not unhappy. I was expecting a simple list of terms, and Marc
provided more. I found his notes and commentary on each term useful. I
particularly liked the idiom involving the homophone for "ear." This isn't
trivial in the least.
And too, this is just the beginning. With efforts underway on both the KBTP
and the KSRP, and Marc's willingness to unearth further notes from Maltz, I
suspect a fair number of translation difficulties can be dealt with quite
simply. If it smacks a bit of a deus ex machina trick, oh well. The
projects are ambitious enough that will take a little help here and there.
