It's not that often that I agree with Glen Proechel. We've had some
wonderful arguments, in print, by phone, and face to face. We're both pretty
bullheaded and stubborn, and somehow manage to push each other's buttons real
well.

And yet, I agree with him about -ghach. Really truly I do. I've spent a
long time silently cringing at a lot of the uses (aka misuses) I've seen of
-ghach. And while I agree that Prochel's reading of 4.2.9 is conservative,
I've always interpreted this section as implying that -ghach is used when a
verb has a suffix. I realize it doesn't explicitly state that, and you might
argue that there are differences between what you'd get with VERB+wI' and
VERB+ghach if the latter were lawful (and it may be). But I'm sorry, that's
the way I read it too.

I'm not willing to go so far as to adopt Glen's other point, that any
monosyllabic word, whether noun or verb, can serve as its opposite number.
And there's a nice letter to the editor in the next HolQeD that's already
come in to point out some of the problems with this.

I don't know what the list position on this is going to be. I don't know if
I can talk Marc into a corner and get him to comment one way or the other.
And yet, Marc *does* read HolQeD, and I am going to ask him for his response
when I chat with him later in the week.

Lawrence
