     I'll leave it to the grammarians to point out the particulars of why you
are completely right and your friend is completely wrong. That is not a
matter of opinion, and I am only qualified on this list to offer opinion.

     You are certainly more grammatically correct than your friend. I offer
other alternatives to consider. In particular, I (as seems to be my mission
in life) suggest to rethink the thought instead of forcing the English words
through a Klingon filter:

                 tlhIngan yIn'e' maSbe' qoHna' neH

                    tlhIngan yIn'e' vItIvqu'taH

                    yIn mIp yInlI' tlhInganpu' neH
             (cheptaH 'e' maS vulqangan) [spit on the ground]
