You can do it either way.... the Linux machine can do routing,
or you can get a router.
Just about any old Cisco will route, but you need address
translation (NAT). This takes more memory in the Cisco, and
a later version of OS for the router. $$. In a serious
environment, you would do this. We do it here at Nook Net.
It routes between logical networks all on the same ethernet
port.
The cheaper solution is to use your Linux box to do the routing
and the NAT. The program you want is called IPMasquerade, or
ipfwadm.
What I would like to see you do is to use just one ethernet
card, say eth0 on the 192.... interface for your private
network, and eth0:0 on the ip your ISP gives you.
However, someone here on the list remarked that this is not
possible and that it needs TWO ethernet cards. Bummer. But
I think this may be an unfounded rumor.
