Your friend is pretty much wrong.
I have a 2 HDs on IDE0 in my computer, the primary has win95 on it and
the slave has Linux on it. I'm not using an IDE CDROM if you are it may
be the slave on IDE0 or the primary on IDE1, you should find out before
you start your installation. If you do have an IDE CDROM as the slave on
IDE0 you might want to move it to IDE1 and put the second HD as the slave
on IDE0.
I DID NOT have to do any hardware swapping to load Linux. I installed
directly to the slave on IDE0 (aka hdb) with LILO going on the
primary.
As I recall this is all explained pretty well in RedHat's Installation
Guide which is on their website and you should do yourself a favor and
read it before you start.
