KDE has some nice features, some I wish were/hope will be included in
other WMs.

Having gotten that out of the way, KDE is a hog! I have 96M memory.
There's no reason why it should take so long to load (a few seconds to
get the desktop, several more to get the little icons that appear too
much like Gate$-crap before you can even do anything, several seconds
to call up anything the first time, several seconds to call some
things up no matter how many times or how recently they've been used).

Many things give me problems compiling, requiring =>qt1.33 as they
state. But, I got that error numerous times even with qt1.40 and
qt1.41 installed. Much of what has compiled without error didn't want
to work as it was written for an older version of KDE, with no notice
anywhere in the docs.

A good alternative for me was to install both KDE and XFCE. I
can use many of the things from KDE within XFCE and get the best of both
worlds. I can use the dialer, mailer, newsreader (which is crap in my
estimation). I can use the editor, much of the graphics-related stuff.
And all without the bloated overhead that KDE carries.

I just have to be careful about what I call up. Clicking a URL in the
mailer will bring up the filemanager and all of the goofy little
'Doze-looking desktop junk, PLUS all of the memory-hogging garbage
attached to it.

Then again, this is strictly my own opinion and is not to be
interpreted as the final word.

I distinctly remember forgetting that.
