Zoki,

  I now understand that Linux is like Zen Buddism: there are many paths to
enlightenment. The path I chose was to use linuxconf (which I didn't know
existed before yesterday!!) to check that everything was almost correct,
then /sbin/ifup ppp0 and /sbin/ifdown ppp0. Works just fine!

  Later today I'll write two short shell scripts which use a simple
nmeumonic (such as "dialin" and "hangup") to make it easier for users. A
copy of these scripts will be in each user's /home directory.
