I started out with the default RH fvwm2 and am now on KDE as the default
and also have Window Maker (very nice looking), Enlightenment (VERY nice
looking but still very alpha/beta), icewm (somewhat based on the OS/2
WPS, and plan to add/try Blackbox next.
For your purposes, the easiest overall is likely to be KDE.
Once you are up and running, you could start looking into the other
window managers (KDE comes with kwm, its window manager) and how to
configure them. Some are somewhat complex to fiddle with while others
are about as easy as KDE (though, perhaps, even less limited overall).
As for your mouse, it does sound like you misconfigured it. You will
want to redo it. You quickly come to count on the left and middle
mouse/trackman buttons to do your text cut-n-paste. It is quite nice.
