The first place I'd start looking is in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
they take a fair amount of decoding, but if you can get the hang of it,
you can tweak them without having to go into X.  

When running redhat on a slow 486, I certainly dislike being forced into X
to get to the config panels, so have become aquainted with the config
files that happen behind the scenes...
