i run a serial port on ttyS0, and my inittab line looks like this:

s1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty -h ttyS0 DT9600 vt320
 

I need the -h since otherwise the hangup signal gets in the way.  I'm
using the DT (dumb terminal) speed definition to prevent it from trying to
cycle through the baud rates, with the terminal on vt320 emulation.

If you can describe how the terminal behaves I might have a chance of
diagnosing it.  I've certainly spent enough time getting this one to work
to recognize at least a few of the symptoms!
