need help adding a terminal

i want to add a terminal on a serial port .
i've read and read. but somehow i'm missing something.
running rh 5.1 out of the box.....added the proper{i think}
entry into inittab, but i just cant seem to get a getty started on my
serial ports.
is there a "how to" on this? That someone could point me too?
i'm kinda lost and i think my trying to apply a slackware way to do this
is not working correct.
