Yeah, I've decided to go SCSI. Most likely I'll go with the SureStore
5000i 4mm DAT. The tapes at least are quite cheap compared to the
Travan or other formats. :)

Adaptec sells a PCI SCSI host adapter (not ultrawide) for $135, also
fits my budget. The drive in question is $500, which is reasonable
as well. $300 or so would have been a bit better, of course, but that
was for another Surestore, and I'm not sure what sort of difference
there was in terms of media price there. Sure, if it uses more expensive
tapes, then I'd be saving money in the long run... :)

SW Technology, in Richardson, TX, I believe. They have the NCR adapters
there, but the DAT drives are way too expensive (at least the ones I
saw there.)

How much $$ and how expensive is the media?
