Hi Jason,
I imagine those Linux users who use desktop environments all have their
preferences, we certainly do.
I also imagine even hardcore command line Linux users would encourage you
to be comfortable with your desire to have a desktop environment, we
certainly do.
We like K Desktop Environment (KDE) www.kde.org. We're running it on both
4.2 and 5.1 machines, though we do almost all of what we need to do in
xterms. =20
I suspect "Why?" is fairly trembling on your lips about now. Several
reasons. =20
First, though my partner is "pert-near an expurt", I've been learning Linux
for only a short period (several months), so I'm resisting the use of gui
tools in my fervor to actually LEARN something. =20
Second, having come from a Windows / OS/2 Warp experience, my partner felt
KDE would give me a broad comfortzone to transition to Linux command line.
(He was right, by the way)
And Third, I now find myself in a position of having to admin our small
company (when he's not here to reinforce me), which is both exciting and
scary as hel..... ummm ... "the dickens" to me at times. Almost all of our
boxes run monitorless, so I use an X server to admin the various servers.
KDE assists me in doing that, again, well within my comfortzone.
All that may be way more than you ever wanted to know about someone else's
personal experience/views, but I do hope it helps in some small fashion. =20
I hope it lets you know that there are other "newbies" wanting to learn and
utilized Linux to its fullest potential, wanting to share their positive
"this worked for me" experiences, and...
wanting help spread the Good GNUs about Linux
Nikki
