Jason,
I'm pretty new at this myself. there is a GUI called X that should have
come with your CD, If that's how you got it. 

My experience has been that the power of Linux is the ability to "tweak"
things via the command line. So for what it's worth, do not neglect the
command line side. It's kinda like DOS with much more power! Some times you
can get things to work through the Command line when the GUI just plays
dumb.
