Modem Troubles

Hi, I have a US Robotics 56k Internal Data/Fax Modem, which doesnt appear to
be on your incompatible hardware list so heres my question. I'm a linux
newbie so I have little idea what I should do to solve this. Im trying to
setup a ppp-dialup connection to my local isp. So i set my modem com port as
/dev/cua3 (com4) from the modem config control panel. Then I goto setup my
ppp connection in the network configurator and I set the modem as
/dev/modem and do all the other necessary stuff like phone # login, pass,
nameservers etc. I click the activate button and nothing happens, I dont
even hear my modem click on. My modem is not set to plug and play, I
manually configured it with jumpers to com 4 and irq 5. The modem works fine
in windows (still set manually with jumpers no pnp crap). So what am I doing
wrong is there something im not doing. Oh yea I'll add in one more weird
quirk that happened. A few weeks ago I installed RedHat off the internet
before i purchased it at a retail store, and the modem worked fine. I didnt
even turn the plug and play settings off and it worked great right out of
the hole. I ran netscape and surfed the web for awhile. Unfortunately my
hard drive crashed and I could not stick with my original ftp install :(.
