Heya, all...
I'm looking for anyone's 2 cents on my systems....
My machines were trashed in my recent move to MD, & I am going to
rebuild them soon... Old machines: 386dx40 LINUX bare bones server
(print,
file, CDROM Jukebox, etc) Main machine 486dx4-100 Win95/LINUX
dual-boot system...
For the new system, I will want my server to be LINUX, which will
serve
files, printing, IP-Masq (or maybe just firewall), and also applications
(to
be addressed later)
The other machine will be a Win NT 4.0 workstation machine, only
(sorry,
but I already have a lot of Win apps & games). I will attach a 15"
monitor &
an old ATI Graphics Ultra to the Linux box, & do most UN*X stuff using
the NT box as an X server (I already know which one I want to use)...
Applications to be run:
Win 95:
MS Office
Mathematica
Matlab
Spice
Borland C/C++ & Builder, etc...
MS Visual C++
AutoCAD
3D Studio
Games
ICQ
CU-SeeMe
etc....
LINUX:
(of course, the normal daemons, etc)
DNS
IP-Masq
Firewall
TCP wrappers
Apache
Spice
Math clones
MAGIC (VLSI layout tool)
some games, etc
Applixware
& more
The 486 will probably graduate to a hard/software developer's
platform...
(Win95/LINUX dual boot)
My questions...
1) What's the best graphics card to put in the NT workstation? I'm
considering the ATI All-in-Wonder 8M AGP, but I am up to sugg's. The
TV tuner is not so important, but I think it'll be neat to have... Oh
ya... The
monitor will be 20 or 21"
2) How much memory for the LINUX box - I'm thinking 64M should do
it.
3) How much for the NT box? - I'm up in the air between 64 & 128M
4) Am I better off making the LINUX box a single processor AMD
(say K6 2-350), or an SMP intel 233 MMX (or maybe SMP Pentium Pro)?
I don't want Pentium II in this box, as that is probably what I'll use
for the NT
workstation, & my funds are limited.
5) Same as above for the NT workstation... I'm thinking SMP P-II's,
but I wonder about the Merced chip that's soon to come out.... I think
this
machine needs the most horsepower, as it'll do the most work (especially
with
Microsloth on it)...
I'm really up in the air about these decisions right now, so I'm
looking for
opinios, especially about questions 1 & 4... Any insight would be
appreciated...
Thanks in advance...
