The message isn't the standard MS MBR message you get when there
are no active partitions (The standard error message is the classic
"NO ROM BASIC INSTALLED") I've not seen this with any BIOS before, but
I'm
guessing that your BIOS is examining the partition table before
passing control to the MBR. Have you tried marking a primary
partition active? Linux doesn't care if you have any active
partitions, but it sounds as if your BIOS might.
I'd start up Linux from your boot floppy, start up fdisk/cfdisk
and mark a primary partition active. (It doesn't matter which
one assuming Linux is the only operating system on your machine.)
