.....it's not a hardware problem, it works in DOS/Windows?
Here's an example of something that happened on my system. I bought a
SoundBlaster card, so I could have sound that was reliably configurable under
Linux. I bought it used, because I didn't want to deal with PNP. The card was
configured for IRQ2. I had read, but not understood, that IRQ2 was cascaded.
THE CARD WORKS UNDER DOS/WINDOWS, but guess what! It won't work under Linux.
I finally gave up and pulled the card out. I changed the IRQ to 10. I
rebooted into DOS, reconfigured it there, I fired up Window 3.11, and after
three reboots got it to reset properly in Windows. Tested in Windows, and it
worked.
Then I rebooted into Linux, recompiled my kernal, to match the new
configuration. (I know now that a complete recompile was probably unecessary,
but hey, I'm still a novice). I rebooted to the new kernal, did all the
tests, suggested in the docs, and fired up X then xcdplay and voila, I can
play CDs in Linux. (Now Playing: Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain)
My point is JUST BECAUSE IT WORKS IN DOS/WINDOWS, DOESN'T MEAN IT'S
RIGHT.

I have to publicly compliment the guys at RedHat. This is my second upgrade
of RedHat Linux, and I really like what you guys have done. It's getting a
really nice set of administrative tools. Keep up the good work. You've earned
my loyalty.
