Thanks to everyone that sent replies on how to speed
up the mouse. Unfortunately, I apparently didn't explain
my request properly. I don't want to speed it up. The
accelerated movement is not precise enough for my
tastes. I want more cursor movement for a given
hand movement at low speed. I want to be able to
move my hand rather slowly about 4 cm and have the
cursor cross the screen completely without jumping
-- as it does in a certain commercial OS. In X, 4 cm
at slow speed only covers about half the screen.
The acceleration feature in X is nice for some, I'm sure,
but it's a workaround, and not a very good one, IMHO.
It's not precise, but jumpy, and once one slows
down for precision work, the hand movement that's
required for a given amount of cursor movement is
too much.
Does anyone understand my problem now? Is there
a fix? I mean, graphic design at this ratio would
have me visiting an orthopedic surgeon in about
a month, I'm sure. I'll have to go back to that previously
mentioned commercial OS if I can't fix this. It has its
faults, for sure, but cursor movement is not one of
them. And that's a huge interface for me.

there's a tweak somewhere to change the default
setting. I can't accept it the way it is.
