Installing Linux FROM DOS partition

I am trying to install RedHat onto my laptop with a zip drive. I did a
similar thing before with Slackware and a PCMCIA CD Rom Drive by copying
the distribution onto my DOS partion and installing from there. It worked
fine before. BUT the RedHat distribution uses RPM packages with way more
than 8 letters in their names, so they get truncated by Windows 3.1, and
any attept at succesful installation is therefore doomed.
Is there some special procedure I have to follow or does the RPM naming
scheme mean that you can not install from a DOS partition, which means I
can not install without getting some other hardware?
