I am running RH-4.0 with the kernel patched to 2.0.25 & compiled to taste,
& I have a masochistic urge to try 2.1.x. Am I right in thinking that I
can do so without ruining my current setup? My plan is to download the
source to /usr/src, temporarily link linux to the new source tree, run
make mrproper, make xconfig (Is there any reason to prefer menuconfig or
config?), make dep, make clean, make zImage, make modules, & make
modules_install, then configure lilo.conf with an additional stanza to
boot the new kernel at my pleasure. Is there any flaw in this plan? My
understanding is that my old module setup will not be disturbed, i.e. that
alongside the present /lib/modules/2.0.25 will be created a
/lib/modules/2.1.x that will be there for the occasions when I want to use
the developmental kernel.
I would appreciate any and all cautions & advice. I can find other ways
to amuse myself if the foregoing plan would endanger my current setup.
