This is usually correct, their is a hardware jumper to set. I have a
HP35480A that operates great with or without compression. HOWEVER,
with most dat drives don't always expect to read the data put on a
tape and sent to someone else to be readable.

Check and see if you really have have the compression turned on within
the drive. Also keep in mind some of these dat's say they will handle
8g/bytes, but I've never seen that in reality. Mostly depends on the
data type, you are sending.
