No, it doesn't. You have to make a kernel yourself. And there
definitely is a chapter in the manual describing how to do this.

Is it SCSI? Enhanced IDE? Hanging out on the floppy controller?
All of these are supported, AFAIK.

It does.
You've just not configured your monitor correctly. Try it as a
"Generic 1280x1024 @60 Hz 17 inch" within configX. It might be better-
read your manual, and find out the maximum frequency at 1280x1024.
