pam auth login question

Hi all. I am having some problems logging into my linux box from my
sparc. Upon telnetting to it, I get the following prompt:
Trying 192.168.1.1...
Connected to 192.168.1.1.
Escape character is '^]'.
Password:
If I telnet as a user that exists on my linux box, and enter the passwd at
this point, I login successfully. Otherwise, I get "Connection closed by
foreign...". In /var/log/messages I have:
Nov 25 23:55:02 gossamer login: FAILED LOGIN SESSION FROM host1 FOR
david, User not known to the underlying authentication module
I am using RedHat 4.0 i386, and pam version:
pamconfig-0.50-5
pam-0.50-22
Any suggestions?
