Have you tried it from any other boxes aside from your SPARC?  you've
probably got it set up to send a default name to your linux box .  I
forget how this is done (I don't use it), but I know in ftp the -n
switch turns it off, there's probably a very similar switch in telnet
(I"m not at a UNIX box to find out, sorry).  try man telnet, and try
from another box, heck try from your linux box "telnet localhost" and
see how it works. I hope that helps.
