Chad,

What is likely happening is your applications cannot find you localhost
address while the connection is up, or is using DNS lookup instead of
/etc/hosts lookup when trying to find the address of the local display.

Try setting the $DISPLAY variable in your .bash_profile

export DISPLAY="put_your_hostname_here":0

Next, check /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/host.conf, and
/etc/nsswitch.conf for problems. What you want to do it make sure that
name lookups
refer to /etc/hosts first, and then DNS. This means defining a search
order of "hosts, bind" in /etc/host.conf, and "files dns" in the hosts
entry of /etc/nsswitch.conf.
