This is my first shot at linux, so, any > details that you could give me I would really appreciate. Thanks. > sure I was, (took me a couple of minutes to remember how, but I did ;) Just skip the lilo install, then boot off the boot disk and at boot: prompt type: linux root=/dev/???? where ???? is your root partition like sda1 Now you can login as root. You will need to create from scratch (at least I did) your lilo.conf file. It is in /etc. You should probably just copy the sample one out of the RedHat install guide (assuming you bought it). Only changes you need off of the sample is change the partition /dev/?? to whatever your root partition is. Check to see that you have a vmlinuz in /boot, if not mount floppy boot disk and copy vmlinuz to /boot. since lilo.conf points to the vmlinuz file on your root partition you should have no trouble typing: lilo at the prompt, this makes your system boot correctly in general. There are other ways to do this and I brushed over a few details you may need to do other things if you plan to do things like boot other OSs with LILO. Email me personally if you like and I can help.
