I also had the same problem with a Pentium 120, 2940uw and NT4.0 etc,etc.
I just ended up using loadlin and an old linux kernel to boot linux, then i
recompiled the new kernel and used it.  Since then no problems... Although
this was a pain, its a lot less trouble than I had with RedHat 3.0.3!
