Craig -- you probably want to fix your hostname. Correct me if I'm wrong.
A couple tips:
1. Keep a copy of the .config that you created during
your last successful kernel build; it should be in
/usr/src/linux-2.0.18/.config or somesuch; and
2. Keep a copy of your old kernel and all modules.
The kernel is in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot, or
somesuch; substitute your architecture.
The modules are in /lib/modules/*.
If the new kernel doesn't work, you can just switch back to the old one.
Keep a bootable floppy handy. This way, you know you'll be able to boot
*some* kernel to go in, mount file systems, and manually restore your
previous setup.
