Still frustrated with Realtek 8029...

I'm beginning to suspect there's a flaw in RH4.0. I'm not seeing
reports of problems like I'm having anywhere else. People are
replying to me like I'm asking if "ls" is supported in Linux!
I've rebuilt the kernel with Ethernet support and (EISA, VLB, PCI and
other) support. I re-ran LILO (both with and without the "append="
feature) and still my card isn't recognized.
What pathetically trivial thing am I missing? eth0 is an "unknown
device" (hell, the only thing that exists is "lo")
I've confirmed the offset address by catting /proc/pci.
I'm quite at my wits end, and I've spent over 8 solid hours trying to
solve this problem. After reading DejaNews, the RedHat archives, and
the HOWTOs, it would seem like _I_ am the one with the problem, not my
hardware (the card works wonderfully under Win95, FWIW).
I'm still open for suggestions. If I can't get this to work, the
future of Linux is 100% dead at my workplace (since the Realtek 8029
card is what we have in all our boxes).
