More rlogin PAM vs NIS?

I got a clue from Ed Williams. The problem is somehow NIS related. My
nsswitch file says:
hosts: files nis dns
The only thing in /etc/hosts is the linux machine information. So, the
name and number lookup for my machine should be occuring via
NIS. Somehow this appears to be causing the rlogin to fail. If I add my
machine to the /etc/hosts file everything works fine and I can rlogin.
Now my debug log is showing that pam_unix authentication is occuring and
I get logged in. The pam.conf file is read in order, right? So,
shouldn't I see some logging from pam_securetty and pam_rhosts_auth?
What if one of those is failing the NIS host lookup? I'd guess the
pam_rhosts_auth, since securetty shouldn't need any host name. If, in
the process of doing this lookup, it printed something out through the
connection. That would cause the protocol error in rlogin. Possible?
