First what version of MacOS are you running? If it is System 7.5.x, then run
Open Transport and select Appletalk and TCP/IP. Second make sure that the
Appletalk port of choice is Ethernet. It won't work otherwise.

As far as private network ips go, I always use 192.168.x.x. It's one of
three privately assigned Class B's.
