I installed it from sources, not an RPM. Although it perhaps isn't strictly
speaking necessary, I uninstalled sendmail first. I read the FAQ and the
INSTALL.* files. It took me about three hours to build, install, and
configure it, including setting up two virtual domains, and running all the
acceptance tests.

Sounds like exmh is trying to send mail via the local SMTP socket. Did
you add the qmail line to /etc/inetd.conf?
Also, qmail supplies a "sendmail" wrapper program for use by programs that
invoke sendmail. This program should be linked or symlinked to the usual
places sendmail lives. It's all in the documentation.
I suppose you were probably hoping for a qmail RPM you could just install
and not worry about. There is a contributed RPM which I haven't tried, so
I'm not sure how easy it is. But I don't recommend trying to set up qmail
from an RPM or otherwise without reading the docs.
