very slow ethernet....

How come my ethernet gave me less than 1KBps thruput most of the
time?
I installed RH4.0 on my IBM Thinkpad 755c with an IBM ethernet
PCMCIA card (not the latest IBM Ether II, I have the old one which
somehow has been recognized as a NE4100 infomover variants by Win95)
From time to time, I receive msgs indicate receiving bogus packets.
This ethernet card works fine in Win95 environment. Any suggestion?
BTW, I tested this setup on a two machines ether segment and got a
1.2KBps ftp thruput under no background traffic.
I used RH's kernel-2.0.18-6.rpm. Do I need to rebuilt my own kernel
for this type of setup?
