Red Hat 4.0, XF86 3.2, gpm not running, cannot open mouse

Hi,
I just upgraded from Red Hat 3.0.4 to 4.0, and decided to upgrade from
the XFree86 3.1.2G SVGA server to the 3.2 SVGA server as well (I have a
IBM Thinkpad 760C with a Trident 9320LCD that doesn't work with any of the
non-beta 3.1 XFree86 releases).
Anyway, soon after installing Red Hat 4.0, gpm appeared to be working.
About half an hour later, I downloaded the XF86 3.2 SVGA server binary
and tried starting it up, and it died with the error messages below
(basically, "cannot open mouse: device busy"). I remembered that gpm was
running, and tried killing it, but X still wouldn't start. Now I can't start
either gpm or X -- both complain that the mouse is busy. I've hunted around
for any lock files that I could think of, but that didn't seem to help.
Should a PS/2 mouse have a baudrate (of 1200) in the XF86Config? Mine does,
and I don't remember seeing that for a PS/2 mouse (though it may well have
been there).
