I figurd it out. The Apache webserver software queris the REMOTE_HOST
for an identd to see if it can determine a user name for the logs:
l72.borg.com unknown - [21/Oct/1996:06:07:57 -0400] "GET /aar/pictures/poster.gi

If identd is set up properly, instead of "unknown" my logs would indicate the
name of the user accessing the website.
Why I'd want this information is beyond me; itstarted happening at around
Apache verison 1.0 or something....
