This very thing happened to me after my child shut down the computer 
during Linux boot-up. You can still try to look at your file system: 
"fd" "cd", "ls" and "cat" commands  worked for me. In my case the 
filesystem was completely screwed up. Unfortunately I didn't know how 
to fix it myself, so I just reinstalled Linux. Took me about 40-50 
min. It may be the fastest solution (although not the most pleasant 
one) for you as well.
