I realized that "the first hit" was generating a sound request (the explosion sound, of course). Xgal then crashed. Soon after, I realized I had to compile my kernel for sound support, since it didn't come this way already. Xgal then worked fine (as well as other games / multi-media programs). Is this perhaps your situation? -- David M.
