I am a recent convert to fetchmail.  The feature I like the most is that
fetchmail will use imap, pop3, or pop2 to retrieve mail and then hand it off
to sendmail (or a MTA/MUA of your choice) for delivery.  Partial list of
features: run in daemon mode, collect mail for multiple remote or local
accounts, per-user config files...
