I'm a complete newbie, and I'm trying to start X windows.
The command "startx" runs a few quick lines of text by
on the screen too fast to read, then blanks out the
display. After about 30 seconds of hard disk thrashing,
the monitor goes into standby mode.

Obviously . . . this newbie needs some help. Can anyone
out there suggest what I might be doing wrong?

Redhat 4.0 (from the cd)
P5-120
48 megs RAM
ATI Mach 64 (2 megs)
Gateway Vivitron 17"
Sanyo 3-disk changer

TIA,

Lance
