No, but it can be useful.

gpm understands Microsoft's protocol with a thrid button
extension... XFree doesn't.  So, I've used a couple mice without
having to deal with mode changes in the hardware. (read: really
annoying thing having to hold down the left button on power up)

Also, gpm can read multiple devices for input... i.e., trackball -and-
a mouse.

(only problem I've had is with the middle mouse button in X... some
weridness with menus that require me to hold down the button and move
the pointer... oh well)
