Thanks to Dave's suggesting, I found (using the two virtual
consoles) that my problem with the boot disk in RH4.0 could be due to
a defect in the media i am using (a CD-ROM recorded by myself).
What i need to know now is how to build my own kernel and put
it in the boot disk. It turns out that I used the Rock Ridge extensions
to ISO9660 using a CD burner in another Unix system. For some reason,
the ISO9660 driver in the Linux kernel gives an error message
when accessing any directory in the CD-ROM. But I edited the rock.c
file in linux/fs/isofs in the kernel source, I commented out the print
statement for the error message, and then i didnt have any trouble
accessing the CD-ROM. Everything else works perfectly.
However, teh kernel in the boot.img is not "my release" so it
shows that message when accessing the CD-ROM. I can build a kernel
with the same options as the one in the distribution, but when I have
tried to put it in a boot disk, it doesnt find the ramdisk that the
default kernel otherwise does find.
So basically: Where can I find information on how to put my own
kernel on a boot disk? I tried the bootdisk-howto and it didnt help
much... there is something i am missing because when I run lilo after
putting my own kernel on the floppy, it ends up linking the boot sector
of the floppy to the kernel image on my hard drive (i currently have
redhat 3.0.3).
Ok... I talk too much... if you got to the end of this email,
thanks, and if you can help me, thanks a lot =)
