After `man cp':

   OPTIONS
       -a, --archive
              Preserve  as  much as possible of the structure and
              attributes of the original files in the copy.   The
              same as -dpR.

Theoretically this should work. It worked for me when I moved
/usr/local and /home to a new harddrive.
